Wednesday 29th April
I was struck today by the changes brought about as Spring erupts into full bloom. The grey drabness of winter has been replaced by the vibrancy of bluebells, wild garlic and blossom on the trees. The rain seemed to make the vibrant colours even brighter and I was reminded once again of the wonder of creation. As Christians we have a faith which celebrates in the creative power of God. The writer of the New Testament book of Hebrews states this so wonderfully.
‘Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.’
It also draws attention to the fact that faith is not reliant on feelings, scientific proof or even rational arguments. Instead faith requires us to put our trust in a God who has revealed himself in creation and through the incarnation of his Son, Jesus Christ. In this present crisis we shouldn’t lose sight of our belief and trust in God who created our world and all that is in it.
Today let us thank God for the beauty of the world around us and pray for those in our communities who work on the land and the seas particularly our farming community and our fishermen. Pray too for those in the food preparation and distribution industries and those who work in supermarkets and grocery stores as they continue to ensure we have food to eat.
God of unchangeable power,
when you fashioned the world
the morning stars sang together,
and the host of heaven shouted for joy;
open our eyes to the wonder of creation
and teach us to use all things for good,
to the honour of your glorious name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
